The SynapseScope Leadership Assessment: a framework for how you actually lead
Most leadership tests tell you what kind of person you are. This one shows what you do when two good options compete for the same hour. The SynapseScope Leadership Assessment is free, takes under 10 minutes, and maps your decisions across eight leadership dimensions to one of 20 leadership personas, with a report you can act on.
What the assessment measures: eight leadership dimensions
Leadership is a pattern of trade-offs. Every leader has finite time, attention and energy, and where they spend it is more telling than any label. The SynapseScope framework measures that pattern across eight behavioral dimensions. Each one is a real tension with two legitimate ends; your position on it is a behavior, not a fixed trait.
| # | Dimension | One end | The other end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Strategic orientation | Visionary: sees the big picture, sets long-term direction | Execution-focused: delivers tangible results through structure and action |
| 2 | Planning horizon | Foresight: anticipates future challenges and plans ahead | Responsive: adapts quickly and decisively as conditions change |
| 3 | Risk orientation | Risk-taking: embraces uncertainty and innovation | Risk-averse: emphasizes stability, consistency and protecting the downside |
| 4 | Innovation approach | Creative: pushes boundaries with bold, novel ideas | Conservative: prefers proven methods and time-tested solutions |
| 5 | Priority focus | People-focused: prioritizes relationships, trust and team morale | Goal-oriented: drives progress through performance and achievement |
| 6 | Value driver | Customer-centric: thinks in terms of client needs and service | Process-centric: builds scalable systems, structure and repeatability |
| 7 | Operating style | Flexible: adapts with agility and openness to change | Reliable: offers consistency, dependability and structured follow-through |
| 8 | Development approach | Growth-focused: empowers others and develops potential | Directive: provides clear guidance, direction and accountability |
Each dimension has its own page with case studies and self-placement guidance (click a dimension above). The framework overview, with the research behind it, is in Leadership Behavioral Dimensions: The 8-Dimension Framework.
Forced choice, not a rating scale
Traditional surveys ask you to rate yourself from 1 to 5. People rate themselves the way they would like to be seen. The SynapseScope assessment instead presents two strong leadership behaviors and asks you to choose one. No scales, no guessing, only realistic trade-offs.
Each item pairs two words or short phrases that describe how a leader might act. You pick the one closer to how you actually lead. Which pair measures which dimension is never shown, so there is nothing to optimize for.
Because every choice is between two legitimate answers, there is no "right" response to aim for, which is what makes the results hard to fake and easy to trust. Try a sample item on Real-World Decisions, and read why the method holds up in Why Forced-Choice Methodology Produces More Accurate Leadership Assessments.
One of 20 leadership personas
Your pattern across the eight dimensions places you in one of 20 leadership personas, grouped into six families. Each persona page describes what makes that leader distinctive, their strengths, their blind spots, and how they land on a team.
People & growth-oriented leaders
Risk & innovation-driven leaders
Stability & goal-focused leaders
No persona is better than another. A Visionary Innovator and a Stability Guardian are both leaders; they are indispensable in different situations, which is why the framework is used to compose teams, not only to describe individuals. For organizations, the same assessment feeds the team dashboard, leadership gap analysis, emerging-leader identification and validated hiring, so one instrument serves individual development, succession and hiring.
Validated, and checked for fairness
The framework is proprietary, grounded in behavioral psychology, and validated against assessment data from thousands of leaders. It measures behavior rather than personality on purpose: personality is stable, leadership is developable, and hiring managers, succession committees and team builders need to know how a leader allocates priority today. The argument is laid out in Why Leadership Is Behavior, Not Personality.
Fairness is designed in, not bolted on. The testing policies, reasonable accommodations and the steps taken to reduce bias and adverse impact are published on Fairness and Objectivity in SynapseScope Leadership Assessments, and the science hub explains how forced-choice leadership assessments are validated and why leadership assessment predicts performance better than personality testing.
